About Current

A life shaped by water

I grew up on the rivers and dams of South Africa. As a junior, I represented my province in marathon kayaking — long-distance races that took me down some of the country's most beautiful waterways. Paddling wasn't just a sport; it was how I learned to read water, to respect it, and to love being on it.

From competitive paddler to ecotourism

Today I'm still an active paddler, but my focus has shifted. I live in Bohinjska Bistrica, Slovenia — a small alpine town on the edge of Triglav National Park. I manage Butterfly Lodge, a boutique accommodation for outdoor travellers, and I'm building the First Mile ecotourism project: an effort to connect responsible travel operators with the adventurers who seek them out.

The problem Current solves

The paddle sport and ecotourism world is fragmented. Brilliant operators run incredible experiences on rivers, lakes, and coastlines across the globe — but there's no single, trusted platform that brings them together for the travellers who are looking for exactly this. Information is scattered across forums, social media, and word of mouth. Current exists to change that.

The vision: newsletter → directory → marketplace

Current starts as a weekly newsletter — a carefully curated dispatch of destinations, operator highlights, gear, and trip intelligence. From there, we're building a searchable directory of paddle sport and ecotourism operators worldwide. The end goal is a marketplace where travellers can discover, compare, and book water-based experiences directly. The newsletter is the foundation. If you're reading this, you're in from the beginning.

Our editorial commitment

Every issue is curated from high-quality sources across the paddle sport and ecotourism world.

We write from a paddler's perspective — because that's what we are.

No undisclosed affiliate links. If we recommend something, we'll tell you why and whether there's a commercial relationship.

Independence over volume. We'd rather send one thoughtful issue than five forgettable ones.
